Q: What to do if my ground glass bottle stopper becomes stuck?

A: Do not panic. This is a problem we occasionally encounter in the lab and the clinic. Despite internet searches suggesting the use of heat, water, brute force and all manner of other things,  very gently levering the stopper all around the neck with a flat piece of metal is enough to release even the most firmly stuck ground glass tops. I stress the levering is very gentle and must be done all the way round the neck.

Q: The plastic pump on a bottle won't work. 

A: Make sure the bottle top is firmly tightened.

If it is loose the pump top won't be able to turn to the open position.
